电子工业（Electro-Industrial）是20世纪80年代末至90年代初形成的一种工业与噪音音乐（Industrial & Noise）形式，源自 EBM与工业音乐（Industrial）的结合。它保留了EBM的部分舞曲特性，但舍弃了EBM简洁明快的风格，转而采用工业音乐更激烈的元素以及更复杂多层的音效。与20世纪80年代典型的工业音乐相比，电子工业往往具有更现代的感觉，这在一定程度上得益于此后技术上的进步。
电子工业是一个较为松散的术语，该风格融合了第一波乐队如Throbbing Gristle、 Psychic TV和Portion Control等第一波乐队的实验性风格，并将其与新兴EBM场景中更具舞曲元素的音乐相结合，创造出一种充满侵略性、黑暗但大多可舞动的电子音乐（ Electronic），其中包含电子乐器、磁带、循环音效以及从电视、广播或电影采样到电动工具和机械声的“现成声音”。随着时间的推移，这种风格逐渐取代了大多数人对“工业音乐”的原始定义，尤其是那些不了解其起源的人。这些音乐家大多仅使用电子乐器——鼓机、采样器、序列器、键盘——并倾向于用采样吉他替代Live吉他音色。这一风格由Skinny Puppy、Ministry（在其制作合成器流行/Synthpop的阶段后转型）、Front Line Assembly、KMFDM引领。这种工业风格自1983年诞生以来，其流行度和影响力持续增长，直至20世纪90年代初，工业摇滚（ Industrial Rock）又将这种音乐风格主要推向了地下。与其他一些子类型不同，电子工业从未完全淡出人们的视线，而是通过一批批具有影响力的乐队不断融入外部的电子音乐元素（如 Techno、Drum & Bass等），成功保持了其生命力和相关性，从而持续吸引着“铆钉头”乐迷群体的关注。
