纽约20世纪80年代的敲击金属（Thrash Metal）场景并非只有Anthrax和Overkill。新泽西州的Ripping Corpse和Revenant乐队早在1987年就开始钻研技术性更强的声音，发展出一种原始的技术死亡金属（Technical Death Metal），激励了一代金属音乐家。纽约市最早也是最有影响力的两支死亡金属（ Death Metal）乐队Immolation和Suffocation在其职业生涯早期曾为Ripping Corpse担任过开场嘉宾。
