《Among Us》的灵感源自真人派对游戏《Mafia》和科幻恐怖电影《The Thing》。该概念最初由Innersloth联合创始人Marcus Bromander提出，他自幼便沉迷于《Mafia》游戏。虽然游戏核心机制基本保留，但团队希望“避免玩家需要精心设计有趣的家庭场景，也不必在枯燥的环境中四处游荡”。因此他们决定采用太空主题，并加入任务系统。

尽管《Among Us》于2018年发布，但直到2020年中期才迎来爆发式流行，最初由韩国和巴西的网络内容创作者推动。Marcus Bromander指出该游戏在墨西哥、巴西和韩国的受欢迎程度远超美国本土。据Willard透露，Twitch主播Sodapoppin于2020年7月率先在该平台推广游戏，随后众多Twitch主播和YouTube博主纷纷效仿。新冠疫情常被视为游戏走红的原因——它让人们在保持社交距离的同时仍能进行社交互动。

游戏热潮催生了大量原创歌曲、粉丝艺术（Fandom Music）及网络梗图。Willard坦言粉丝创作内容“实为《Among Us》开发过程中最精彩的部分”，Marcus Bromander则称其为“我最喜爱的现象”。游戏使俚语“sus”（意为“可疑”或“嫌疑人”）广为流传，该词在游戏发布前已有使用。此外，“Among Us everywhere”梗指各种意外物体酷似船员角色的现象。2022年9月，“sus”正式收录进韦氏词典。
