Slam Death Metal是残酷死亡金属（Brutal Death Metal）的一个子流派，侧重于慢速或中速（以及Breakdown）的乐段，这些乐段由半音阶、闷音的旋律构成，即所谓的“Slam”。与残酷死亡金属的基本美学相比，Blast Beat和吉他独奏并不那么重要，但也经常被使用。视觉美学也十分相似，不过Slam Death Metal通常会将残酷死亡金属的恐怖和暴力美学发表现到极致。

该流派起源于20世纪90年代的纽约死亡金属场景（New York Death Metal，受到纽约硬核/ New York Hardcore的声音、态度和美学的影响），其中Suffocation等乐队率先使用了Slam乐段。Devourment和Internal Bleeding通常被认为是第一批真正意义上的Slam乐队，因为他们普及了该流派的许多歌曲创作模板和视觉美学。其他著名的乐队包括Cephalotripsy、Short Bus Pile Up。Slam的人声通常由音调极低、难以理解的死嗓组成，经常使用受嘻哈音乐（Hip Hop）启发的节奏，鼓点中也经常出现嘻哈元素。

该流派有时会与也使用无调性吉他旋律、嘻哈元素的新金属（Nu Metal）和也使用死嗓的死核（ Deathcore）相提并论或混为一谈，然而，除了某些知名的融合乐队（如Waking the Cadaver）之外，真正的Slam Death Metal与这些流派几乎没有真正的联系。
