芭蕾（Ballet）是一种古典音乐形式，旨在为一种戏剧性舞蹈表演形式（即芭蕾舞）伴奏。尽管风格多样，但大多数芭蕾舞音乐以管弦乐（Orchestral Music）作品形式创作，包含可灵活适应舞台情节的舞曲节奏、与情节叙事相呼应的主题旋律与主导动机，以及突出舞者动作的轻快音色。从结构上看，芭蕾音乐的篇幅可从简短的单乐章作品到复杂的多乐章组曲，具体取决于演出需求。

芭蕾的起源可追溯至文艺复兴时期（Renaissance Music）意大利的宫廷舞蹈，当时的音乐仅作为舞蹈的配乐，且具有庄重的舞厅音乐风格。Catherine de' Medici在法国推广了芭蕾舞，它在路易十四的宫廷中进一步发展，以Jean-Baptiste Lully的乐谱为代表。此时，歌剧（ Opera）与芭蕾舞也紧密相连，两种体裁常在歌剧芭蕾（Opéra-ballet，如《Les Indes galantes》）中融合。

法国大革命后，芭蕾舞逐渐走出贵族圈，吸收了浪漫主义时期（Romanticism）新兴的资产阶级音乐风格，如《Giselle》等作品。舞蹈学院的兴起以及足尖鞋、芭蕾裙和芭蕾舞鞋的发明，使舞者能够完成更具挑战性的技巧，从而让编舞家设计出在早期芭蕾舞僵硬的舞厅风格中无法实现的流畅优雅动作。相应地，作曲家开始采用节奏和句法更灵活的创作语言，以流畅的连奏段落更好地契合舞蹈的新型弹性形式。这一时期芭蕾的中心逐渐从法国转移到俄罗斯，其中最值得注意的是Pyotr Tchaikovsky的准交响乐配乐，这些作品拓展了芭蕾的艺术范畴，并使其确立为独立的音乐流派。

在现代古典主义（Modern Classical）时代，芭蕾舞进一步被革命化，这得益于印象主义（ Impressionism）的兴起（例如《Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune》）以及Igor Stravinsky的作品，其节奏复杂的新古典主义（ Neoclassicism）风格与原始主义编舞相结合，产生了深远影响。该时期的其他作曲家则在形式上进行实验，例如在《Ballet mécanique》中以电影中的移动物体取代舞台上的舞者，以及在《The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady》中融入爵士乐（Jazz）等其他音乐类型。
