本书将Mashup音乐分为两个部分，Early Club Mashups词条描述的是千禧年之前出现的、以俱乐部为导向的早期Mashup，Mashups词条描述的是出现于2000年之后的互联网上的当代Mashup。
Mashups（也称为Bastard Pop、Bootlegs）是通过将两首或多首录音作品的片段混合而成的歌曲。将一首歌曲的原声人声无伴奏片段与另一首风格截然不同的歌曲的伴奏片段混合，可以创造出一首具有令人惊讶的适配度的新作品，属于掠夺采样（ Plunderphonics）的一个子类型。
当代Mashup作品流派于2000至2001年间在英国兴起。随着该流派于2002至2003年间传入美国，“Mashup”（或“Mash-up”）一词逐渐流行。首场专门播放Mashups作品的舞厅派对于2000年在伦敦举办。最初名为“King of Boots”，该名称很快改为“Bastard”。尽管不再是定期举办的俱乐部活动，但它仍被Mashups社区视为经典。除了在舞厅中的影响力日益增强外，Mashups作品还经常在伦敦XFM电台的《The Remix》节目中播出。
随着英国Mashups场景的逐步成型，一个重要的发展发生了。2001年11月，音乐博客Boomselection.info成立。Boomselection是首个专注于混音的博客，据Mashups社区许多人称，也是互联网上首个MP3博客。不久后，Boomselection.info提供了查找和下载Mashups作品的平台，而Grant McSleazy创建了在线论坛Get Your Bootleg On（GYBO）。GYBO于2002年2月在免费的基本论坛托管服务上启动。时至今日，GYBO已发展成为Mashups社区的核心在线交流平台。Mashups作品开始在英国以外地区获得关注，这在很大程度上得益于互联网——Mashups是首批真正依赖互联网实现全球曝光的音乐类型之一。
