暗波（Darkwave）的两个主要分支是空灵波（Ethereal Wave）和新古典主义暗波（ Neoclassical Darkwave），此外，不少暗波爱好者也定义了暗波的第三大分支，称之为“电子暗波（Electro-Darkwave）”。它的定义很简单：使用合成器和其他电子手段来营造与哥特摇滚（ Gothic Rock）类似的氛围的音乐类型。这一流派在德国曾被称为“Electrowave”，但由于近年来其他电子音乐风格的持续发展，可能会引发争议而弃用。一般来说电子暗波有两种形式：有着暗波式氛围的合成器流行（ Synthpop），被称为Dark Synthpop，和受到EBM（如Project Pitchfork、In Strict Confidence）、电子工业/Electro-Industrial（如L'âme Immortelle、Die Form）和Futurepop（如Diorama、BlutEngel）的影响的暗波作品，第二种形式在1990年代开始凸显。在电子暗波场景中还有一种被称为“暗波合成器”（ Darkwave Synth）的新潮流，这是一种借鉴了80年代早期的极简浪潮（Minimal Wave）、冷波（ Coldwave）等流派的音乐。
