数学核（Mathcore）是金属核（Metalcore）的一个节奏更为复杂的子流派，起源于20世纪90年代中后期。当时，Deadguy、Candiria、Coalesce等金属核音乐家在原有的金属核音乐中加入了非常规的拍号、切分音、不和谐的旋律、不规则的节奏转换。20世纪90年代末至21世纪初，数学核运动在地下流行起来，The Dillinger Escape Plan、Botch、Converge的作品广受赞誉，影响深远，成为技术性和侵略性兼具的主流音乐。
虽然早期的数学核乐队确实包含硬核朋克（Hardcore Punk）的元素，但后来的数学核乐队开始尝试并进一步将他们的声音与不同类型的音乐相结合，包括碾核（ Grindcore）、后硬核（Post-Hardcore）和电子音乐（ Electronic）。
这一名称源于将同样节奏复杂的数学摇滚（Math Rock）与金属核结合在一起，但与数学摇滚相比，数学核与金属核的共同点要多得多；虽然它们都有节奏复杂的特点，但数学核的声音更具侵略性和沉重感，更多时候还伴有嘶吼的人声。
