实验大乐队（Experimental Big Band）指摒弃了传统爵士乐（Jazz）的结构和音色，转而演奏先锋爵士并试图突破音乐界限的 Big Band音乐。20世纪40年代，Stan Kenton的Progressive Big Band就已尝试在Big Band的阵容中进行创新，引入了西方古典音乐（Western Classical Music）的作曲技巧，但并没有完全接受后来的Experimental Big Band的声音和影响。Experimental Big Band在二十世纪六七十年代开始兴起，先锋爵士（Avant-Garde Jazz）音乐家Charles Mingus、Bill Dixon、Sun Ra、Don Ellis都曾尝试过Big Band形式，此外还有The Jazz Composer's Orchestra、Carla Bley、Charlie Haden、Globe Unity Orchestra等乐队或音乐家，他们的作品融入了当代爵士（ Modern Jazz）/现代古典（Modern Classical）的影响，常见的融合元素有自由爵士（ Free Jazz）、Third Stream。

在21世纪，这一流派迎来了复兴并继续发展，如Fire! Orchestra、Angles 9等乐队融入了爵士摇滚（Jazz-Rock）、巴尔干民谣（ Balkan Folk）、EAI等不同元素，在Experimental Big Band的基础上创造出了自己独特的风格。

总的来说，Experimental Big Band要比Big Band更“先锋爵士”，“实验性”往往来自于音乐家对传统爵士的解构、拼凑、创新和自由发挥（即先锋爵士），故此处放在先锋爵士分支中。有些Experimental Big Band也往往更多地从自由爵士而非Big Band中汲取灵感，如London Jazz Composers Orchestra、Jean Derome、Sunny Murray等。
