前卫金属（Progressive Metal）作为一种实验性的音乐流派，出现了各种衍生和新的音乐风格。极端前卫金属（Extreme Progressive Metal）是指任何与极端金属形式融合的前卫金属，受到了敲击金属（Thrash Metal）、死亡金属（ Death Metal）、黑金属（Black Metal）、厄运金属（ Doom Metal）以及其他被认为是极端金属流派的影响。前卫金属与死亡金属结合便形成了前卫死亡金属（Progressive Death Metal），这是一个死亡金属体系中较为重要的流派；前卫金属与黑金属结合便形成了前卫黑金属（Progressive Black Metal）；前卫金属与敲击金属结合便诞生了 Djent的雏形。
