Zydeco是一种快节奏的舞蹈音乐，将路易斯安那州西南部传统的黑人克里奥尔民谣、由法裔加拿大人衍生出的Cajun、与早期非裔美国人的节奏蓝调（ Rhythm & Blues）、蓝调（Blues）、爵士（ Jazz）、福音音乐（Gospel）表演者的声音融合在一起。最早的歌曲出现在20世纪20年代末，但这种音乐风格在20世纪50年代才因Clifton Chenier和Boozoo Chavis而流行起来。

与Cajun音乐一样，Zydeco的主要乐器是手风琴，但也常常加入低音吉他、号角和键盘乐器，并以强力的切分音为典型特征。到20世纪40年代，搓衣板（又名“washboards”或“frottoirs”）乐器的使用已成为Zydeco音乐中流行的一部分，这种乐器在现代的Zydeco乐队中无处不在。
