与老派死亡金属（Old School Death Metal）类似，老派死核（Old School Deathcore）是一个广义的术语，可以包括多种原始的死核（Deathcore）风格。当传统的、听感更残酷的金属核（ Metalcore）乐队（如All Out War乐队）已经开始运用死亡金属（Death Metal）的元素时，老派死核乐队将这种影响推向了更高的层次。20世纪90年代初，Candiria、Damaged等老牌死核乐队成立。本世纪初，All Shall Perish等流行乐队大量注入了旋律死亡金属（Melodic Death Metal）元素，而Suicide Silence等乐队则因受到残酷死亡金属（Brutal Death Metal）的强烈影响而变得更加注重Breakdown，从而形成了与老派死核拉开距离的独立风格。尽管如此，The Red Chord等乐队仍然忠实地演奏着这一类型的音乐，而Venom Prison、Xibalba等乐队也大致在接下来的十年中相继出现。
