Proto-EBM用来形容EBM这一完整音乐流派的早期雏形，该流派于本十年后半段正式成形。这些作品中（或其封面艺术中）可辨识的风格元素，正是后来定义该流派的关键要素。比如说混音中突出的机械鼓点（带有标志性的4/4底鼓节奏）、切分音Bassline、喊叫式的“命令式”人声，以及社会主义现实主义的视觉意象。可以被标记为Proto-EBM的大部分作品属于极简合成器（ Minimal Synth）、合成器朋克（Synth Punk）或合成器流行（ Synthpop）等流派。
