UK Dubstep是Dubstep的原始形态，于2000年代初起源于英国（具体为伦敦南部）。其特征在于贯穿始终的稀疏节拍与厚重的低频，完全摒弃了2010年代发展出的 Brostep等风格对中频合成器的依赖，尽管UK Dubstep作品仍可能包含合成器或铜管乐器的主旋律。该流派常营造黑暗、夜色、空旷且“都市化”的氛围。
该词主要用于与Brostep作区分，作为指代老派的、注重夜间美学的Dubstep的标签，故有Old School Dubstep、Classic Dubstep、OG Dubstep、Real Dubstep等别称，由于常常使用140BPM的速度，所以也有140 BPM、140的别名。也因此UK Dubstep并不是只能指英国制作人制作的Dubstep，而是一个用来形容一类听感的Dubstep的统称，一般认为包括早期在英国俱乐部诞生的分支 Tearout、Purple Sound，受其影响的未来车库（ Future Garage）与相似的Post-Dubstep，以及为了反对Brostep的声音而作为UK Dubstep黑暗、富有空间感的声音的一种复兴形式的地牢之声（Dungeon Sound）。最初的 Riddim亦可以算作UK Dubstep的一种衍生，有时称作“UK Riddim”来与Brostep浪潮中的Riddim做区分。标签Deep Dubstep最初基本上也可以指代UK Dubstep，但目前也作为一种UK Dubstep的现代形式不断被独立音乐制作人创作出来，声音与地牢之声相似。
Part 1 - Proto-Dubstep & Early UK Dubstep (1999~2003)#
21世纪初，伦敦舞曲文化地下圈正酝酿着一场尚未命名的新浪潮，Big Apple Records、Tempa和Ammunition Promotions等重要厂牌与推广机构为其提供了支持。要精确定位Dubstep的起源实属不易，因其本质是英国车库音乐（ UK Garage ）与2-Step 的动态演变产物。不过我们可将时间范围锁定在1999至2002年间——当时Steve Gurley、El-B、Darqwan和Benny Ill等制作人开始创作更暗黑、低音更厚重的2-Step与车库音乐作品。

Part 2 - A New Scene (2003~2006)#
2002年，Tempa厂牌创始人Neil Jolliffe在新闻稿中为描述新型音乐寻找术语时，创造了“Dubstep”一词。大约同一时期，专注于伦敦暗黑风格舞曲的俱乐部Forward>>开始吸引大批人群。Forward>>还在海盗电台Rinse FM开设节目，由Kode9主持。
2002年末至2003年间，以Skream、Benga、Hatcha和Loefah为代表的音乐人开始塑造出鲜明的Dubstep音色。Kode9在主持电台节目的同时创立Hyperdub厂牌，不仅推动Dubstep走向主流，更深刻影响了电子音乐的整体演进。除Hyperdub外，由Digital Mystikz与Pinch创立的DMZ和Tectonic厂牌，与Big Apple Records、Tempa共同成为场景核心力量，Deep Medi Musik厂牌亦紧随其后崛起。同期，开创性的Dubstep网站GetDarker亦应运而生。

Part 4 - Two Paths (2008~2012)#
那么接下来该何去何从？2009-2010年不正是Dubstep真正开始崛起的时期吗？答案是——emm，算是吧。现实情况是，人们在那波初始热潮中听到的Dubstep，其实大多属于更粗粝尖锐的近亲Brostep。当时多数制作人要么转向Brostep，要么加倍深耕原生风格。部分制作人甚至开创性地融合两种风格，形成兼具Brostep能量与Dubstep极简特质的融合音色。本阶段的例曲不涉及Brostep（因为有专门的Brostep词条），但会涉及几张重要的融合风格作品。

当Brostep在美国真正开始流行起来（2010-2012年）时，Dubstep圈内似乎存在一种普遍情绪，部分乐迷试图尽可能与这种音乐风格保持距离。这种反应催生了Dubstep的一个新的子流派——地牢之声。这类曲风较之该流派鼎盛时期的主流作品更为阴郁，其声音设计更具针对性——尤以滑腻而清脆的Bass Stab为特色，营造出疏离的氛围感。Chestplate、Innamind和Artikal等厂牌正是凭借这种新声响，在社区中开辟出属于自己的独特领域。
