与死亡厄运金属（Death Doom Metal）相比，黑厄运金属（Black Doom Metal）并不是一个非常著名或成熟的子流派，但与死亡厄运一样，有许多方法可以将这两种流派融合在一起。黑厄运金属乐队主要受到斯堪的纳维亚第二波黑金属浪潮之前的黑金属（ Black Metal）乐队的影响，即Bathory、Hellhammer、Celtic Frost、Samael。
这一场景的很多乐队都代表了一个时代，当时黑金属和死亡金属（Death Metal）之间的区别还没有明确界定，或者说还没有人关心这些区别，因此与死亡厄运重叠的情况会十分常见。
