Deep Soul于20世纪60年代中期在美国兴起，通常借鉴典型的南方灵魂乐（Southern Soul）旋律，并突出福音音乐（ Gospel）和蓝调（Blues）的影响，尤其是芝加哥蓝调（Chicago Blues）。它的演奏节奏相对较慢，主要集中在收敛而亲切的主唱演唱上，强调忧郁的音调和歌词，营造出一种低沉、内省的氛围。常见的器乐风格包括浑浊、“scratchy”的吉他声，突出的号角声（在20世纪70年代的录音中，弦乐伴奏更为流行），以及晶莹剔透、听起来充满灵性的钢琴和管风琴声。20世纪70年代末，随着迪斯科（ Disco）和较新的R&B音乐流派的出现，这种风格逐渐式微。

这个词是由Dave Godin创造的，他编纂了自己的《Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures》系列。著名的音乐家包括James Carr、Otis Redding、Percy Sledge、O.V. Wright、Aretha Franklin、Lee Moses、Irma Thomas。

由于经常受到相似的影响、情绪、南方灵魂乐的背景和抒情歌曲的影响，一些Deep Soul音乐家也开始涉足乡村灵魂乐（Country Soul）。
